Dead rat smell: finding it and cleaning up safely
A strong, sweet, rotten smell that is worst in one corner of the house is usually a rat that died out of reach: in the ceiling, inside a wall, under a cabinet or behind the ref. The smell stays until the body is found and removed.
A dead rat also means live ones got in. Our rodent and rat removal visit finds the way in as well as the rats still using it.
Why it is there
Rats keep to hidden routes, and the place one dies is usually one of them. Poison makes this much more likely: a poisoned rat usually dies where it hides rather than in the open, which is one reason how to get rid of rats recommends traps over loose bait indoors.
How to find it
- Follow your nose to the strongest point. Check it again in the morning and at the hottest part of the day.
- Look for flies gathering at one spot on a wall, a ceiling board or a cabinet, and for a damp stain on the board.
- Start where you saw signs before: droppings, scratching overhead at night, grease marks along a beam or gnawed holes.
- Check the usual places: the ceiling space above the kitchen, behind and under the ref, inside base cabinets and behind the stove.
Signs that rats have been living overhead are set out in rodents in your ceiling.
How to remove it safely
Dead rodents, their droppings and their urine can carry disease. These are the steps in the CDC's How to Clean Up After Rodents (updated July 2024, read 13 October 2026), which cover a dead rodent as well as droppings, urine and nests:
- Wear rubber or plastic gloves.
- Mix a bleach solution fresh: 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water, or use a disinfectant that says "disinfectant" on its label.
- Spray the rat, any nest and the area around it, and let it soak for 5 minutes, or as long as the disinfectant label says.
- Bag it: put the rat and any used trap in a plastic bag, tie it shut, put that bag in a second bag and tie that one too.
- Throw it out in a covered bin that is emptied regularly.
- Wash your gloved hands with soap and water or disinfectant, take the gloves off, then wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Do not sweep or vacuum droppings, urine or nest material: it puts tiny droplets that can carry viruses into the air. Spray and wipe instead. The same rules for droppings are in Tagalog in tae ng daga sa bahay, and where rats hide in a house is in daga.
When you cannot reach it
Air fresheners and charcoal cover the smell for a while, but the source is still there. If the rat is above a ceiling board, look for an access panel first. If it is inside a wall or under a fixed cabinet, getting to it means opening something up, which is a job for whoever can repair it afterwards. Clean the spot with the bleach solution once the body is out.
Stopping the next one
The rat came in through a gap that is still open. Young rats can get under a door with a gap of about 13 mm, so seal around pipes and cables, close gaps under doors and screen the eaves. If you find a small one, read baby rat: it means a nest close by. To have the entry points found and sealed and the rest of them dealt with, book a visit through rodent and rat removal. We cover Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Tarlac and Olongapo.
