Baby rat: what finding one tells you
Young rats start moving about near their nest from their second week. A baby rat in the house means a nest close by, and a mother that will have more litters.
How fast a baby rat grows
They are born hairless with their eyes closed, in a litter of 5 to 8, about three weeks after the parents mate.

Baby rat or mouse?
Rats grow much bigger than house mice, but a young rat is easy to take for a mouse. Look at the head and feet: a very young rat's are large for its body, while an adult mouse's are small in proportion. Its gnaw marks and droppings are the other clues, compared side by side in mouse vs rat and the droppings identifier. In Tagalog, with a real photograph of the house rat, see daga.
What to do when you find one
- Look for the nest nearby. Rats stay as close to their nest as they can when food is near. Check behind boxes, in cluttered storage and in the ceiling, and look for droppings near food and pet dishes.
- Close gaps under doors. Young rats can squeeze under a door with a gap of only about 13 mm, half an inch.
- Do not rely on rat traps alone. Young rats usually cannot be trapped until they are about a month old, and small ones often will not set off a rat snap trap.
- Act before the next litter. A female roof rat usually has 3 to 5 litters a year, with up to 8 young in each; a Norway rat has 4 to 6 and can raise 20 or more young a year.
