Cockroach bite: do they bite, what it looks like, and what to do

They can, but it is rare and seldom serious. What cockroaches leave in a house does more harm than their bite: droppings that carry germs onto food and allergens into the dust you breathe.

Can cockroaches bite you?

A review of the scientific reports found twenty cases of cockroaches biting people. The worst were on ships so overrun that the insects gnawed the crew's skin and nails, and in one case sailors slept in gloves to keep them off their fingernails.

When it happens, cockroaches most often gnaw fingernails, the eyelashes of sleeping children, and the hard skin on hands and feet. They can also leave small wounds on softer skin. The American and the Australian cockroach are the two most often blamed.

Do cockroaches in the Philippines bite?

They can. The American and the Australian cockroach, the two big ones that come in from drains and gardens, are both found in Philippine homes. The small German cockroach of the kitchen has also been reported biting people, in very heavy infestations, and feeding on food left on the faces of people asleep. All of these are unusual. The cockroach identifier shows how to tell the four apart.

What a cockroach bite looks like

There is no mark that says cockroach. The reports describe gnawed fingernails and toenails, eyelashes chewed short, rough patches on the hard skin of hands and feet, and small wounds on softer skin. We found no medical source that describes a typical cockroach bite on the skin. Many websites say it looks like a mosquito bite, but when we traced that claim it led back to pest-company blogs.

So a red, itchy bump on its own cannot tell you a cockroach did it. A gnawed nail or missing lashes after a night with cockroaches in the bedroom point that way. Itchy bumps, sometimes in a line, on skin that was against the mattress are worth checking against bed bug bites.

A cockroach bite near the eye

Cockroaches go for the eyelashes and eyelid skin of sleeping children, not the eye itself. The risk is a scratch on the surface of the eye from their spiny legs, or a bit of dirt left in it when the child wakes and rubs.

Because the eyelashes of sleeping children are one of the places cockroaches gnaw, a bite near the eye should be seen by a doctor. On the way:

  • Do not rub the eye or squeeze the eyelids.
  • If there is dirt or a small particle on the surface of the eye, rinse it gently with clean water.
  • Wash the skin around the eye with soap and water, keeping soap out of the eye itself.

Go for emergency care if the eye is painful and red, if vision blurs or doubles, if a scratch or cut seems to reach the eyeball, or if bleeding will not stop. Never try to pick out anything that looks stuck in the eye. The full first aid, in Filipino, is in kagat ng ipis sa mata.

Treating a cockroach bite

  1. Wash it well with soap and water.
  2. Cool it with ice wrapped in a cloth, ten minutes on and ten minutes off.
  3. Watch it for a few days. Redness, swelling or pain that keeps growing can mean an infection, and a doctor should see it.
  4. Get emergency help at once for trouble breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face or mouth, a tight throat, or weakness.

If you woke with itchy bumps and never saw a cockroach, compare them with bed bug bites before deciding what bit you. A sharp, burning bite that swells fast is more likely a centipede bite.

The bigger risk is in the dust

Cockroaches carry bacteria that cause food poisoning, which the University of California IPM program records for the American cockroach in particular, and they carry them in their droppings. Dried droppings also break up into house dust, and some people are allergic to what is in them. Researchers link cockroaches in a home to worse asthma.

Who reacted to cockroach in a skin test

Allergic children38 of 102, about 37%
Children without allergies5 of 100, 5%
Patients with allergies28% of 114
People without allergies7.5% of 253
Older studies (Bernton and Brown, 1964 and 1970) as reported in Ebeling, Urban Entomology, University of California, Riverside, read 25 September 2026. The children were tested with German cockroach.

Anyone who suspects an allergy to cockroaches can ask a doctor for a test.

Keeping them away from people

  • Keep food and rubbish in closed containers with tight lids.
  • Do not leave food, dirty dishes or pet bowls out on counters or floors, and keep eating out of the bedrooms as far as you can.
  • Mop the kitchen floor and wash the counters at least once a week.
  • Fix leaking taps and drain pipes, and fill the cracks they come in through.
  • If you buy bait stations, they are a pesticide: read the label before you open the pack, and put them only where a small child or a pet cannot reach them, which is the rule in the US EPA’s pesticide safety guide.
