Bed bug bites: what they look like and how to be sure

A bed bug bite looks like a mosquito bite, and some people never mark at all. The bite cannot tell you it was bed bugs. The bed can.

What bed bug bites look like

A slightly swollen, red patch that may itch, much like a mosquito or flea bite. The marks can be scattered or in a straight line, usually on skin left uncovered in bed: the face, neck, arms and hands. Most people only notice them one to several days after they were bitten, and in some people they take as long as 14 days to show, so it is often hard to say where or when it happened. You do not feel the bite itself, because bed bugs inject an anaesthetic as they feed.

Why a bite is not proof

Bed bug bites can look like mosquito or chigger bites, like rashes such as eczema or a fungal infection, or like hives. Some people do not react to the bites at all. So the only sure sign is finding the bugs, or what they leave behind.

What to check on the bed

With a torch, look along the seams of the mattress, the bed frame and headboard, the joints of drawers, and the seams of any sofa someone sleeps on. Look for:

  • rusty or reddish stains on sheets or the mattress, from bugs that were crushed;
  • dark spots about the size of a full stop that bleed into the fabric like a marker, which are their droppings;
  • tiny pale yellow skins the young shed as they grow, and eggs about 1 mm long;
  • the bugs themselves: small and flat, from 1 to 7 mm long;
  • a sweet, musty smell where there are many.

They are about as thin as a card, so they fit into very narrow gaps. The seams and the frame come first, because of how close to the bed they stay.

How far from the bed

Where they usually liveWithin about 2.4 m of where people sleep
How far one can go in a nightOver 30 m
CDC gives these as 8 feet and over 100 feet; drawn here in metres. Source: CDC, About Bed Bugs, read 12 October 2026.

So while the bed is where to look first, they can reach the next room as well.

Treating bed bug bites

Most bites need no medical treatment. The CDC suggests an antiseptic cream or lotion for the itch, and not scratching, so the skin does not get infected; for itchy, inflamed bites an antihistamine may help. Bed bugs are not known to spread disease to people. See a doctor if the swelling is large or painful, and get help at once for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat, which are rare.

If you find the signs above, the bites will keep coming until the bugs are gone. What the bugs look like at every stage, with a real photograph, is in bed bugs.
