Cockroach poop: what it looks like and what it means

Small black specks on a shelf or a hinge come from the small kitchen cockroach. Larger dark droppings on the floor under a sink or a drain come from the big ones. Either way, the droppings sit right beside where they hide.

That makes droppings the best map you have. Our cockroach and ant control visit starts from the same places: where the droppings are is where the bait goes.

What cockroach poop looks like

  • Small cockroaches (the German cockroach): small black droppings, like ground pepper, left on surfaces near where they hide: cabinet hinges, drawer corners, behind the ref.
  • Big cockroaches (the American cockroach): larger droppings, dropped below where they hide, so on the floor under a sink, beside a floor drain or at the bottom of a storeroom shelf.

Rat, mouse, gecko and drywood termite droppings are often found in the same places. They are drawn to scale side by side, with what each one means, in the pest droppings identifier.

Why you see poop but no cockroaches

Cockroaches spend the day in tight, dark gaps, crevices and corners, so you can live with them for weeks and only see what they leave. The small German cockroach keeps to kitchens and sometimes bathrooms, near spilled food and damp. The big American cockroach prefers dark, damp places such as drains and sewers.

Fresh droppings after you have cleaned mean they are still there. To see how many, put a sticky trap where the droppings are and check it after a few nights. Egg cases nearby are the next sign: see cockroach eggs, and baby cockroaches if small ones are showing up.

Is cockroach poop harmful?

It can be, mainly for allergies and asthma. Proteins in cockroach droppings are allergens, and Cornell's IPM programme notes that even small amounts can sensitise a person, while a heavy infestation can lead to long-term asthma problems, in children and adults. Their saliva and the body parts they shed do the same.

The allergy shows up as coughing, a blocked nose, wheezing, a skin rash, and ear or sinus infections, and it tends to last all year rather than come and go with a season. If someone at home has asthma that gets worse indoors, tell their doctor about the cockroaches.

What to do about it

  1. Clean the kitchen floor, sink, counters and stove, and wipe away the droppings where you find them.
  2. Seal food and rubbish in containers with tight lids.
  3. Fix leaks under sinks and around the aircon, so there is no water for them.
  4. Clear piles of newspaper, laundry, boxes and dirty dishes where they shelter.
  5. Bait where the droppings are. Cornell advises changing to a bait with a different active ingredient about every three months.

Why bait beats spray, and how to tell which cockroach you have, is in how to get rid of cockroaches and types of cockroaches in the Philippines.

When to book a visit

If the droppings keep coming back after a few weeks of cleaning and baiting, or you find them in more than one room, book a visit through cockroach and ant control. Tell us where you find the droppings; that is where we start. We cover Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Tarlac and Olongapo.

Tell us what you have found

Send the pest, the town and roughly how long it has been going on. That is enough for us to say what the treatment would involve and what it depends on.
