How to get rid of ants at home
Wiping or spraying the trail you can see leaves the nest, and the queens in it, where they were. What ends it is bait the ants carry home, and closing the way in.
Why the trail keeps coming back
Spray on the trail, or bait carried to the nest
- 1A spray kills the workers on the trail. Sprays give only temporary control, and may not be safe to use indoors.
- 2The nest and its queens carry on, and new workers take the same route.
- 3Workers carry bait home. It is slow-acting on purpose, so they reach the nest before it works.
- 4It is shared in the nest, and the whole colony, queens included, can be killed.
What to do, in order
- Wipe the trail with soapy water as soon as the ants come in. It removes the scent trail they follow.
- Find where they come in and seal it with caulk.
- Keep food in clean, sealed containers, not plastic bags or open packets.
- Keep plants, grass and mulch about 30 cm away from the walls. It cuts down where ants forage and nest against the house.
- If you use bait, use it as its label says. Ant bait is a pesticide. UC IPM rates ready-made, closed bait stations the safest kind for a household, and the US EPA’s rule is that bait never goes where a small child or a pet can reach it. Read the label before you open the pack; it says where the product may go and what to do if someone touches or swallows it.
- Give it time. Baits are slow by design, so keep cleaning trails while they work.
In the Philippines, buy only products registered with the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority, which publishes the list of registered products. Do not spray pyrethroid insecticides outdoors on paths, driveways or around the foundation; UC IPM notes they wash off into waterways.
The small pale ants that spread when sprayed
With pharaoh ants, a repellent product can make the colony split: a queen and a few workers break off and start new colonies elsewhere in the building. Activity drops for a while, then comes back from more places than before. That is why a spray can makes them worse. If the ants are tiny, pale and in long lines somewhere warm, check them against the ant identifier first, and leave the treatment to someone who has dealt with them before.
What people ask about getting rid of ants
What is the fastest way to get rid of ants?
For the ants in front of you, a sponge and soapy water: it takes up the ants and the scent trail together. For the colony, there is no fast way. UC IPM says it can take 5 to 10 days of baiting before you see fewer ants, and that indoor sprays are not usually needed and do not stop more ants coming in.
What smell keeps ants away? Does vinegar work?
UC IPM, whose advice this page follows, lists soapy water, window cleaner or a vacuum for clearing a trail, because each one removes the scent the ants follow. It does not list vinegar, and it does not list any smell or oil as a way to keep ants out. Some essential oils are toxic to cats; which ones is in pest control for homes with pets and kids.
How do I stop ants coming back?
Close the way in and take away the food. Caulk the cracks they use, watching the places where pipes and wires come through the wall, since ants like to travel along them. Keep food sealed and wipe up sweet and greasy spills. Ant invasions come back at the same time each year, so UC IPM suggests caulking before they usually arrive.
Are the flying ones ants or termites?
Winged ants and winged termites swarm at the same time of year and look alike. Flying ants shows the three differences, and types of ants in the Philippines names the common house ants.
When to call someone
If the trail is back within days of baiting, if they are coming from inside a wall, or if there are fire ants where children play, book a visit through cockroach and ant control. We cover Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Tarlac and Olongapo.
